May 1, 2008

Today Italy observed Labor Day, so it was a holiday for David. We planned to go castle hunting up in the mountains, and even though it was rainy, cloudy and gray, we started our ascent. We found the first castle, located near the town of Maniago, which as you can see by the sign, is on its second millennium.

Across from where we parked the car was a field surrounded by this stone wall with a lovely open portal in it. No indication as to what had once been here though.

The weather looked threatening, so we decided to postpone this castle visit til another day, and drove onward to the second castle, which was located further into the mountains. The further up we drove, the colder it got of course, and the rain turned to hail. When we reached the line of demarcation where the road was covered with hail pellets the size of peas, we decided to try this another day also.

Not to waste a day’s adventure, I suggested we look up a lighthouse, any of many located along the Adriatic coast. I randomly chose one near Bibione and we headed for there. That is one of the great things about this area where we are located --- less than an hour and you are in the mountains, an hour and you are at the Adriatic Sea.

En route to the sea, we noticed this unique chapel located in the middle of a field.

The rows of short trees that you see were on either side of a dirt road that led from the paved road straight to the front of the chapel. We are assuming this is a private chapel as there were closed iron gates next to the paved road, hinting that you should not enter. A very pretty building.

Since it was a holiday weekend, there were lines of cars going to the beach. Or at least I thought that was where they were headed. It must have been all they wanted was to go into town where all the excitement of the hotels, shopping, restaurants, etc was, because fortunately the beach area was not crowded at all.

All along the beach runs a wall with access areas every so far. At these access areas are concessioners who rent out beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. priced according to ow many you want and where they are located. The row nearest the water is of course the most expensive. The price also reflects whether it is peak tourist season, with July and August getting the highest in rental price. At that time it will cost about $20 for two lounge chairs with umbrella, nearest the water for a full day. (It’s also cheaper to rent for a half day.) But most importantly, these areas have toilets!

Today was the opening day for the season at the concessions, but business was very slow as I saw only about two chairs in this area being used. You could pass through and use the beach, which is what we did. It was quite windy and there were a number of parasailers and wind surfers taking advantage of the breezes.

Notice the red rescue boat in the above picture. These were located at very short intervals all along the beach.
