April 6, 2008 Part 3

I think I said in an earlier posting that churches here have bell towers for the most part, rather than steeples. Here are a couple of odd ones we came across on our search for Mezzomonte.

After many unsuccessful tries, we finally made it to Mezzomonte, which was reached by a very narrow, steep, winding road.

Here is a picture of Mezzomonte’s tower, which is really quite new compared to the church and the rest of the town. It appears to be dedicated to some of the former priests, according to the inscriptions.

Palm trees grow here naturally; many people have them as landscape plants, and you can see one in the background. This pine looks like it is a palm-tree wannabe or else someone is have a try at topiary.

The cemetery was next to the church . They were doing some construction work there, thus the netting.

As you can see, the views from nearly halfway up the mountain were outstanding!

On the way back down, this “structure” caught our eye.

According to the sign, it was erected by the “senior citizen club of Mezzomonte” July 15, 2002.
